Bringing Projects to Life with Precision, Commitment, and the Utmost Care
Scott Kelly, Principal
The love of building and creating started at a young age for me, be it towers of cardboard blocks or Lego bricks. In high school I began to explore the world of construction, apprenticing with a stonemason and then moving on to a tenant finish company with my father. Throughout college, I continued with the tenant finish company and spent my summers working for Sundt, a large commercial contractor in Arizona.
Before graduating, I also spent time working on framing crews and apprenticing as an electrician, all the while buying tools and completing various construction projects on the side. By 2005 I established SK Concepts, specializing in custom carpentry, decks, and remodels. Then, in late 2015, the company rebranded to Precision Construction.
After losing my father in 2006, carpentry and construction became even more important and personal to me as a way to remember him. To this day I still have his carpenter’s pencil, and even if it's just to draw a line, I've used either his level or framing square on every project I've completed since he passed.
I have been tremendously blessed to work with some amazing people and am extremely dedicated to and proud of the relationships built with clients. Being welcomed back into the homes of client’s years after projects have been completed is my favorite part of the business.
Building Dreams
I feel truly fortunate that "work" is something I love, and I consider it an honor to be entrusted with making each client's vision come to fruition. Every project provides me the opportunity to help clients create something they've yet only imagined.
Evolution: The path to becoming steel framing specialists.
1. The beginning:
The journey began in 2005 when SK Concepts was established as custom carpentry business, building bookcases and customized storage solutions. Attention to detail and craftsmanship led to referral opportunities and a broader use of skill sets. Eventually people were asking for everything from hardwood floors, to roofs and everything in between. In 2010 the focus was narrowed down to kitchen and bathroom projects.
2. A new opportunity:
In the spring of 2013 a previous roofing clients contacted me and asked me if I would consider replacing their deck for them. I was happy to help and found myself surprised out how much I enjoyed the process and found myself hooked on researching the industry and building techniques and practices. That deck garnered enough attention that the primary source of work changed from remodeling to deck building.
3. Evolution #1:
In 2015 a client turned friend and I were out to dinner and the topic of business came up and, in that discussion, it became apparent that SK Concepts did not give people and potential clients any context as to what I did. The decision was made to rebrand. In researching references and speaking to clients the word “precise” seemed to keep coming up and thus SK Concepts underwent evolution 1 to become Precision Construction.
4. Evolution #2:
The next step forward came at the end of 2015, joining NADRA (North American Deck and Rail Association) and becoming a certified TrexPro, we now had some credentials and the shift was made to nearly all deck work. In addition to Trex we are also certified with Timbertech, Fortress and most recently Deckorators.
5. Trying something new:
After researching and interviewing engineers for nearly a year I made the commitment to build at least one steel frame deck in 2016, in the spring after beating out 19 other contractors I finally got the chance. The learning curve was tremendous, but the end result was amazing and when I looked at the benefits of steel to both myself and the client, I knew that steel framing was the future for Precision.
6. Evolution #3 / The point of no return:
June 2017 was the turning point for Precision, we landed a project on a home that backed to open space and the client didn’t want to obstruct the view with posts from the deck. We researched every type of wood option we could find and, in the end, still came up short of ideal spans. At this point our structural engineer had us make the switch to structural steel beams and posts to support the light gauge steel framing. Once we saw the capabilities and possibilities there was no going back and from that point forward, we have gone exclusively to steel.
7. Where we are now and where we are going:
After turning the corner in 2017 Precision has become one of the premier steel frame deck builders in the country, we’ve consulted with major manufacturers on steel products and C-level executives from the major decking brands have visited our projects to see what is possible. Our clients typically remark that their deck beams are often larger than the ones in their house and inspectors have commented that the decks will “outlast the house”. We are constantly pushing ourselves and our engineer to solve problems and build projects that others can’t. Whether you are a homeowner, builder or architect when it comes to decks no matter the dream, difficulty or size, Precision can build it.

What Our Clients Are Saying
"Aptly named precision construction as the crew pays exceptional attention to detail. My largest project was a deck Scott and his team constructed in February of 2019. While only 13 years old, the existing deck was hardly safe to use. Scott designed the project with a spiral staircase that added a full 100 SQ feet to the deck on the existing foot-print and finished it off with an outdoor grill and fire pit. Additionally, we gained the surprise benefit of only having 3 steel posts instead of 7 wood posts/footings which made the area beneath the deck open, shady and far more “livable” than ever expected. Precision has also performed some other interior and exterior work and I have always been pleased. I'm not a craftsman but I have dabbled enough to know the crucial components. Some of the details I have noticed with Scott and his crew: -Cuts are clean and joints are perfectly fitted to match tightly, -Special attention is paid to the flashing and waterproofing taking special care so no moisture penetrates the siding. They were so good, I used them to replace all the flashing and trim around my windows which was rotting due to poor construction from the original build, -Trim and finishing detail is extremely clean., -Worksite is tidy after each work day so I wasn’t stepping over tools and scraps. I have known/worked with Scott for 4 years and his crew has never changed. They are reliable and I’ve never given a second thought to allowing them access to my house."

"Scott and the team at Precision Construction designed and built a large elevated deck on the back of our house. The project included removing the old deck and redesigning the entire structure to more than double the size and also completely replace the support structures to be further apart so they would no longer block our view. The deck has unobstructed views to the South and the old deck had supports blocking those views from both on the deck as well as from the patio beneath it. Facing South also made the sun exposure a concern. Scott designed a pergola to go over the deck that would maximize the shade provided and also prevent the sun from coming in through the windows underneath the pergola which has made that part of the house livable as well as able to see the views year round. When we first engaged Scott we were looking to simply add on to our existing deck and live with the original builders design flaws, but he was able to come up with a solution to completely transform the space and also solve some of the issues inside at the same time. The work is top quality and we have had no issues with the craftsmanship. Since this project, we have had Scott and team back for several other projects in the house and will always contact him first when we need more work done."

"Scott Kelly and the guys at Precision are meticulous builders. Every corner lines up perfectly, every decision that had to be made was discussed in detail, with pricing considerations. Scott worked with the structural engineer and the manufacturer to push the limit on what was possible with our deck...curved boards, extra long deck boards, steel joists, floating deck over the garage. I have worked with many many builders and have never worked with someone like this before. Scott is a true pro who keeps the owner’s best interests in mind throughout the project."

"We work with a large number of different contractors in our business installing helical piers. Because of that fact, we tend to notice the really good contractors, the average ones, and the ones that we could barely recommend. Precision Construction is one of our favorite companies because they are always prepared, do the absolute best quality work available, and are a pleasure to work with! We truly can't put this high mark and recommendation on very many other companies - book a job with Scott/Precision, and you will flat out get a great result!"
